Common heating & cooling problems
Describe what's happening when you're connected. The provider will tell you whether it's something they handle and what the next step is.
AC not cooling
Warm air from the vents, an outdoor unit that won't start, or ice forming on the refrigerant lines.
Furnace not heating
No heat at all, a burner that lights and shuts off, or a system that cycles on and off every few minutes.
Heat pump trouble
Cool air in heat mode, a unit stuck in defrost, or a loud outdoor unit.
Thermostat issues
Blank screens, a system that ignores the settings, or a new smart thermostat that won't work with your wiring.
Noises and odors
Banging, squealing or grinding, or a burning smell that doesn't fade after the first few minutes of the season.
Maintenance and tune-ups
Seasonal checkups, coil cleaning, condensate drain clearing and airflow checks.
Quick checks before you call
- Confirm the thermostat is set to the right mode and temperature, and that its batteries aren't dead.
- Look for a tripped HVAC or air handler breaker. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and tell the technician.
- Replace a clogged air filter. Restricted airflow is a common cause of frozen coils and overheating.
- Make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs.
Safety first: If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the home immediately and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Choosing a provider with confidence
Check credentials
Many states license HVAC contractors, and technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification.
Ask about diagnostic fees
Most providers charge to diagnose a system. Ask whether that fee is applied to the repair if you go ahead.
Compare repair and replace
For older systems, ask the provider to explain the repair cost alongside replacement options and any local efficiency rebates.
Understand the warranty
Ask what the manufacturer's parts warranty covers and how long the provider guarantees labor.
Frequently asked questions
Who will I be speaking with?
Your call is routed to an independent heating & cooling provider that participates in our network and serves your area. KBHomeFix doesn't employ technicians or perform any work.
Does it cost anything to call?
No. Calling our referral line is free. Participating providers, or the call networks that represent them, pay us a marketing fee for connected calls. Any charge for work, diagnostics or visits comes from the provider, so ask about pricing first.
How often should my system be serviced?
Many manufacturers recommend a yearly checkup, with cooling serviced before summer and heating before winter. Your provider can advise based on your equipment.
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Common causes include a dirty filter, frozen coils, a refrigerant leak or a failed capacitor. A technician needs to diagnose the specific cause.
Do providers install new systems?
Many participating providers handle full system replacements as well as repairs. Ask about installation when you are connected.
